Arts and culture in Kuala Lumpur

Art at Wei-Ling Contemporary

Art at Wei-Ling Contemporary

Begin your descent into KL's arts and culture underbelly by visiting KLPac, the go-to destination for local contemporary theatre productions, located within idyllic pre-show picnic ground Sentul Park. The brains behind KLPac's landscape design, modernist architect Ng Seksan's coolly crafted boutique hotel Sekeping Tenggiri is one for the art enthusiast, as it is home to eye-catching art installations and his famed private art gallery. With its circular and clandestine underground gallery surrounded by lush tropical greenery, the country's maiden destination gallery Rimbun Dahan, only accessible twice a year during its highly anticipated annual exhibitions and otherwise entirely by appointment, is worth a 40-minute drive out of the city. If you prefer something closer to the city, Wei-Ling Gallery, which represents several local and regional big names, has a beautiful atmospheric location in a pre-war shophouse in Brickfields (which is just a few doors away from Vishal).

Fans of jazz, blues and pop-rock should stroll past the formidable wooden door at the bar's rear to gain access into intimate and charming speakeasy-style jazz club No Black Tie. In terms of exciting regular live shows, The Bee Publika's diverse roster of international and local musicians who have graced its Upfront indie gigs, Feedback open mic nights and BBQ Sundays grill-and-music gatherings is second to none. Meanwhile, Urbanscapes, KL's most vibrant and eclectic creative arts festival that has seen headlining performances by Sigur Rós and Yuna in the past, features a carnival of visual arts, fashion, music, culture and local artisanal food.
