They call ’em the dog days and, sure enough, Netflix has a terrific dog movie for you come August: the dreamlike revenge fantasy White God. Elsewhere on their just-announced lineup, there’s the anxiety of a Hefner-like impresario (The Look of Love) and two of last year’s most impressive female turns, one from Kristen Wiig (Welcome to Me) and the other from Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night). Here are the five most exciting new Netflix movies to stream on your couch, plus a complete list of everything that’s being added to the service this month.

The big-time breakthrough of L.A. auteur Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days) is an Iraq movie done right: no politicizing; only stoic, Hawksian men of action holding up under pressure. It’s an acute portrayal of the daily pressures of Iraq-based bomb defusers. Jeremy Renner’s central performance has an eerie calm about it.

Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s torchy seduction song clues us in to the evolving nature of Michael Winterbottom’s intriguing drama, which first plays like a coy whiff of mid-’60s sexual naughtiness, then as a desperate cry for help. The movie is a biopic of London gentlemen’s-club impresario Paul Raymond (Steve Coogan), who launched a Hefner-like London club in the late ’50s.

Alice (Kristen Wiig) was diagnosed with manic-depressive disorder when she was 16. She’s also just won $86 million in the lottery. As our critic David Ehrlich wrote in his review of this impressive indie: “It’s here that Wiig’s wallflower wit finally dovetails with a lead role that has the depth to support it. Her resolutely humane performance insists that none of the laughter ever comes at her expense.”

Marion Cotillard plays a Belgian factory worker who, while on a health leave, is voted out of her job by the small staff. She’s granted a weekend to appeal to their benevolence and return their bonuses, so she can stay. Of the film, our critic David Calhoun said: “This is political drama (with the smallest of ps) at its finest and most humane, gently ingraining ideas about empowerment and taking a stand.”

You don’t want to be on the wrong side of a pack of dogs mistreated then set free to get their revenge on human society. Our critic Cath Clarke (who called the star pooch the “Al Pacino of dog actors”) enthused: “The way director Kornél Mundruczó gets his canine cast to run the gamut of emotions from face-licking adorableness to teeth-baring ferocity is genuinely impressive.”
