Pyrotechnician Christophe Berthonneau will orchestrate London's official New Year firework display from The London Eye and barges in the Thames, which will be broadcast live on BBC One. BBC Radio 1 will supply the sounds for Londoners who head into town to watch the fireworks live. If you're planning to be among them, don't leave it too late or you may find yourself being turned away. It'll be a great display against a stunning backdrop and good viewing spots are limited. Don't make for the London Eye – the immediate area is cordoned off as a fall-out zone – and note that road closures in the area will start as early as 7pm. The prime vantage points are the Victoria Embankment, north of the Thames, and the bridges (Waterloo, Westminster and the eastern Jubilee footbridge; the Millennium Bridge has only a partial view of the Eye). Dedicated disabled viewing areas can be found on the Albert Embankment, opposite the Houses of Parliament and on the Thames Path behind St Thomas's Hospital; for more info visit www.london.gov.uk/newyearseve/faq.jsp#faq11. There will be all-night travel on Tube, DLR, Tramlink and selected National Rail services in the Greater London area. Twenty-four-hour bus routes will run as normal, but there will be a reduction in bus services leaving central London from around 7pm to 3am on New Year's Day, because of the road closures. From 11.45pm to 4.30am travel on all journeys on Tube, DLR, Tramlink and buses will be free, as will some National Rail services on selected routes out of London after midnight. For detailed travel information visit www.tfl.gov.uk.
