A tradition harking back to 1715 when actor Thomas Doggett concocted the idea to celebrate the coronation of King George I, this river race sees six watermen (river workers who ferry passengers along or across the Thames) compete for the prize of scarlet livery and a silver badge. The race starts from London Bridge at 12.30pm and the finish point is the Albert Bridge in Chelsea. City Cruises are offering an on-board vantage point on a Riverliner at St Katharine's Pier, with Pimms and lunch, for £35 (www.citycruises.com).
