Mr Punch (of Punch and Judy) celebrates his 350th year in 2012 and this annual festival celebrating the art of puppetry is ready to doff its cap. The day after the official Mr Punch's Big Birthday Party taking place as part of the national Heritage Lottery-funded 'Big Grin' on Saturday May 7 (which will see performances in a giant booth in front of the portico of St Paul's Church and a parade, followed by the cutting of a very large cake), the annual Covent Garden May Fayre & Puppet Festival brings together Punch and Judy professors from around the country for a procession led by a brass band with a toast to Mr Punch (11am), a church service with Mr Punch in the pulpit (noon) and an afternoon of puppet shows and workshops, with folk music, maypole dancing and clowns (12.30-5pm).
