British Airways London Eye
It's hard to believe that the giant wheel known as the London
Eye was originally intended to turn majestically over the Thames for
only five years after the turn of the new millennium. But the BA
London Eye has proved so popular that no one wants it to come down,
and it's now scheduled to keep spinning for another 20 years (though
intermittent rent hikes occasionally threaten its future, much to
the horror of Londoners). The 450ft monster, whose 32 glass capsules
each hold 25 people, commands superb views over the heart of London
and beyond. A 'flight' (as a turn is called) takes half an hour,
which gives you plenty of time to ogle the Queen's back garden and
follow the silver snake of the Thames. You can get London Eye
information via a guide to the landmarks (£2). Some people opt to
make a London Eye booking in advance (although they take a gamble
with the weather), but it is possible to turn up and queue for a
ticket on the day. Night flights offer a more twinkly experience,
and you can even get married in a pod. There can be long lines in
summer, and security is tight.
