This ceremony to mark the official opening of the new Household Cavalry Museum by the Queen (which opens to the public in July), calls in 220 horses, two mounted bands and ‘at least one camel’. Ceremonial displays will re-enact the cavalry’s history from 1661 onwards, with commentary provided by Michael Portillo, Stephen Fry (who has recorded the voices of King George III among others) and Judi Dench (providing the voice of Queen Victoria).
There’ll be a recreation of the coronation procession of Charles II and the 50-yard cavalry charge at the Battle of Waterloo, and a display of 60 military vehicles – the most seen on the streets of London since World War II. This is a bumper week for royal events, as there’s also the Beating Retreat – during which the Massed Bands of the Household Division perform and take a salute by a member of the royal family – and also the rehearsal for the Queen’s Birthday Parade (the rehearsal takes place on Saturday, will be less crowded than on the Queen’s official birthday on June 16 and is free to attend).
