    Small and beautiful

    • Matt’s Gallery

      42-44 Copperfield Rd, E3 4RR, 020 8983 1771

This Mile End warehouse has been producing significant installation art for over 30 years – somehow attracting big names despite the minuscule budgets. Ex-Time Out Art editor Sarah Kent was always a big advocate, and this remains one of our favourites. Read more

    • Bistrotheque

      23-27 Wadeson St, E2 9DR

A modish bar and restaurant serving bistro food, Bistrotheque doubles up as an inspiring cabaret space. Jonny Woo’s collective of drag stars works from here, gay burlesque bear troupe Bearlesque met in the back room and The Lipsinkers (miming drag queens) have become a favourite. Read more

    • Tatty Devine

      236 Brick Lane, E2 7LH, 020 7739 9191

Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden’s Soho and Brick Lane boutiques may be diminutive in scale, but they house an extraordinary treasure trove of vibrant, pop-inspired acrylic jewellery. The consistently original collections are created in a studio near their Brick Lane shop. Look out for their autumn/winter ‘Button Up’ collection of Pearly Queen designs. The stores also host art exhibitions, and celebrity hairdresser Charlie Le Mindu styles hair at the Brick Lane store on Friday afternoons. Read more

    • Eagle London

      349 Kennington Lane, SE11 5QY

    • Bobbin Bicycles

      397 St John St, EC1V 4LD, 020 7837 3370

Bike boutique Bobbin Bicycles opened in Islington in 2008, with retro panniers, stylish leather helmets and an Italian bike that will transform you into Audrey Hepburn, or so Bobbin claims. Its new, larger, premises include a gentleman-cyclist’s emporium featuring the famous Pashley Guv’nor, colourful Dutch Grandpa bikes and a ‘helmet grotto’. Read more

    • Plastic People

      147-149 Curtain Rd, EC2A 3QE

Tiny pitch-black dancefloor but super-club-challenging sound. The capital’s flagship dubstep night, FWD>>, has been putting on the best MCs and DJs here every Sunday since 2002, rattling skanking clubbers with its ear-thrashing bass. Cutting-edge electronic agency Warm, mini-rave DJs The Count and Sinden and the likes of Riton, 2ManyDJs and Andrew Weatherall have all played intimate sets here in the past year, too. Read more

    • Notting Hill Arts Club

      21 Notting Hill Gate, W11 3JQ

West London is pretty weak when it comes to interesting club nights. But the Notting Hill Arts Club is testament to the many interesting sounds of London, especially the global beats element. Find everything from Latin raves (Movimientos and Muevete) to real funk nights (Funk Royale) and tropical-electro shindigs (Radioclit’s awesome Secousse), while Alan McGee’s indie bash, Death Disco, still rolls on every Wednesday. It also houses Videopia, where you can get to play the lead role in a classic flick, ‘Star Wars’, say, or ‘Jaws’, and then watch as they film, edit and screen it on the night. Read more

The only place I can think of is Vin Mag at 39 Brewer Street. Fantastic range of vintage posters and memorabilia.

    Hi Timeout,
Am going to uni in a week and desperate to get some attractive decor for my tiny bare university halls room! I googled to find film posters in London, and came up with this quote
"Tucked away in a Soho sidestreet, this unassuming, cavernous little shop sells a vast array of vintage film posters from across the globe as well as..."
... but on looking on the page the described shop is not detailed! Please help!
