View of Phyllida Barlow's work in 'The Real', curated by Fergal Stapleton - © Noah Da Costa
Featuring over 80 artists, this is essentially three separate exhibitions, put together by a combination of five artist-curators in a converted biscuit factory in the heart of Bermondsey. The ground floor is a vibrant mix of more than 70 established and up-and-coming names while in the basement works by Phyllida Barlow, Karin Ruggaber and others use low-fi materials and a minimal aesthetic. The third instalment, Shahin Afrassiabi and Sam Basu's multi-screen text installation 'Data Wall' is as different again. It's frustrating as all the ingredients are here for a gourmet meal, but they would sit better in the stomach with a balancing of courses and (upstairs) a simplifying of flavours. (HS)
