There are some truly spectacular objects here, quite as bizarre, dazzling and extraordinary as they were intended to be. The baroque sensibility seemed to transform everything it touched into a grotesquely ornate parody of itself, and many of the things here are easy to marvel at but hard to actually like. Walking through this fine exhibition, it is not in the least surprising that the era it covers was drawn to a close by the French Revolution. (FG)
