Bourdin is often compared to his contemporary, Helmut Newton, and certainly neither man was averse to a scantily-clad, lean-haunched beauty. But the difference in sensibility between Newton and Bourdin is that between a blow-up sex doll and a fresh, pretty corpse. Sex and commerce collide differently in Bourdin's work, as these glossy images from the 1970s and 1980s show. Everything is perfect - the slender legs and carmine lips - but the perfection is abstract, not human. (NC)
