Motion Towards Collapse by Molly Smyth
Recession may be bad for big business but the enterprising end of the artworld knows that it can also throw up creative opportunities. Peckham's Hannah Barry Gallery have set a shining example of what can be achieved by negotiating with Southwark Council several years ago to turn the top two stories of an underused, multi-story car park in Peckham Rye into a sculpture park. In this, its latest incarnation, 17 works by young artists have been installed on the roof, the best of which, including Molly Smyth's architectural breeze block construction and Matt Holroyd's diagrammatic painted floor works reflect aspects of both the car park's bleak municipal design and the surprisingly stunning views over London which it offers.
The floor below has been given over to four local young galleries and project spaces, who over the summer have put on three changing shows (of which this is the final), for which recent graduates and young artists have created ambitious sculptures, installations and performances.
It may be windswept, rough-and-ready and well-off the beaten track but it's worth the effort, not only for the energy evident in the work and the project as a whole but in the attention to detail, from the professional signage to the venue from the station, to the equivalent of the museum restaurant in which to discuss the work over a coffee after viewing, in the creation of the fully licensed, tarpaulin-covered Franks Café and Campari bar.
