'How They're Grown', by Kasia Fudakowski - the artist and Tintype
It wasn't that long ago that there were way more eager young artists than there were gallery spaces willing to show them. Now it seems that there are more group shows of 'emerging' talent than it's possible to keep track of. 'Irregular Wasps' is among the best of the current crop. Curated by Peter Lamb and Joby Williamson, it includes nine artists: Alan McQuillan, Kasia Fudakowski, Edward Fornieles, and six others who have recently started to make a name. All have employed a lo-fi aesthetic to create sculptural works that punch above their humble materials, either in playfulness, poeticism or subtlety.
Ruairiadh O'Connell has already made blips on the artworld radar with his deceptively simple conjunctions of everyday objects. Here he has screwed metal kick plates to the walls (those protective panels attached to the bottom of doors) printed with traces of black pattern. The puzzling abstract marks hover between the random scuffs they might be and what they are actually based on - imprints from women's tights.
Royal College of Art graduate Flora Parrott creates a similar charge with her mixed media wall works 'Inhale/Exhale' and 'Roof of Mouth', the latter a combination of black paint, copper rods threaded with vertebrae bones, brass nails, gaffertape and prints of cactii and coral. Parrott's appealingly odd arrangement may have particular art world relevance; providing as it does a pretty accurate representation of the part of the anatomy from which it takes its name, the morning after a gallery private view.
