'Generating X', 2008-09, by Daniel Pasteiner
Ventriloquist isn't for dummies. Ranging from a 1933 Minotaur etching by Picasso to new works by emerging talent, its 42 inclusions offer a tough (slantwise), riches-flaunting essay on how artists disguise or delegate their 'voice' in their art. There's a chewy 1984 Jasper Johns painting full of iconographic cues lifted from 'Moby Dick' and proto-abstract Mississippi potter George Ohr, plus offerings from younger artists who are inevitably outshone. Amongst them, the non-painters fare best, with highlights including Marcus Coates's accelerated footage of tweeting humans and Pil and Galia Collectiv's deadpan video of druid-like figures seemingly using Stonehenge as a musical instrument.
