Locate

'Location, location, location' is the brief for these three new artist commissions, each a response to the idea of site: actual, fictional or conceptual. Aura Satz has been artist-in-residence at UCL's Ear Institute, out of which she has created a multi-layered audio of voice against a swirling acoustic soundscape. The work is accessed by standing under a suspended brass trumpet like a large witch's hat which, although immersive and eerie, in a wind whistling through windows kind of way, as an experience doesn't quite convey the sonic complexities that one imagines Satz has been exploring.

Mel Brimfield has used the premise of a fictional performance to script a film in which four characters each recount their involvement with and recollection of this now mythologised work. In questioning just how one does locate a performance after the event - through its retelling? Its reviews? The ephemera that remains? - Brimfield's film also flags up the 'emperor's new clothes' potential for performance art and the art world in general.

Sarah Pickering creates the most engaging response to place with her installation built up from images and objects that relate to the locations involved in the criminal investigation of notorious Bolton art forger Shaun Greenhalgh. Featuring Pickering's photographs of a recreation of the shed in which Greenhalgh worked, alongside reproductions of Greenhalgh's forgeries made for a BBC dramatisation of the case and actual catalogues which describe a statue made by Greenhalgh but successfully sold as a Gauguin, it's a mind-twisting reminder that the layers of representation that locate an object in time, history and reality can never really be defined.
