Aimé Maeght and his artists

This selection is packed into the Sackler galleries: Giacometti's 'Walking Man' sculpture seems about to march right into his 'Spoon-Woman'; Calder's exuberant mobiles probably haven't jostled one another this closely since they left his studio. Still, you can watch Matisse drawing Marguerite: look up, and you'll see the finished picture. Matisse and Bonnard, who helped Maeght start his gallery, introduce us to their brethren, giving a sense of artists not as moneyspinners but as companions and collaborators. (NC)
