Lowry's distant little figures and brutal cityscapes are unique in their portrayal of the mid-twentieth century British working class. This exhibition aims to highlight the French influence at the root of his depictions of industrial Britain – putting his work in the context of contemporaries such as Camille Pisarro and his teacher, the symbolist Adolphe Valette – whilst also drawing attention to his singular position as a painter of modern British life.
