Freud began reading Shakespeare when he was eight, and the Bard's plays are part of the raw material from which Freud constructed psychoanalysis. In this talk, subtitled 'The Formative Influence of Shakespeare on Freud and the Development of Psychoanalysis.' speaker Christian Smith is well placed to offer views on the relationship, having recently completed a thesis for his doctoral studies which explores the formative influence of Shakespeare on Marxism, psychoanalysis and Frankfurt School Critical Theory.
