The Royal Opera House was founded in 1732 by John Rich on the profits of his production of John Gay's Beggar's Opera; the current building, constructed roughly 150 years ago but extensively remodelled since, is the third on the site. Visitors can explore the massive eight-floor building as part of an organised tour, including the main auditorium, the costume workshops and sometimes even a rehearsal. Certain parts of the building are also open to the general public, including the glass-roofed Floral Hall, the Crush Bar (so named because in Victorian times, the only thing served during intermissions was orange and lemon crush) and the Amphitheatre Café Bar.
