Certainly the most ‘designed’ option of the many good pubs in Balham, Avalon is worth a visit just for a peek at the HG Wells-inspired dining room or to enjoy the brilliant garden (huge, beautifully landscaped; feral children and barbecues in good weather). But if you just want a comfortable pub with nice sofas and a heated smoking area, it can do that too.
We’ve had several meals in the dining room; although decent and of the meaty, solidly British variety – steaks, ox tongue, wood pigeon – they’re a bit pricey unless you’re taking advantage of one of the frequent meal deals. There’s always a decent selection of real ales: Adnams Lighthouse, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Sharp’s Doom Bar, say.
