Despite its upper-crust appearance, the BBC welcomes all-comers to its clubhouse. The bowls club’s history has been sensitively preserved, with a warren of small, wood-panelled rooms decorated with rosettes, chesterfields and an old wooden scoreboard.
The bar itself is cosy and crowded, with a fire in winter; draught Ubu, Peroni and Grolsch are served along with bottled Honey Dew, Fursty Ferret and Abbot.
Food is a focus, with sharing platters of cured meats, comfort-food mains and generous Sunday lunches.
There’s plenty of space in the back rooms to dine in comfort – space enough, in fact, for two snooker tables. A crazy-paved front terrace accommodates smokers.
