As with the name, the look at this burger joint cuts right to the point. With just a couple of blonde wood tables running along the side of the restaurant, the space is dominated by a 20-tap bar, and a simple griddle packed with plump, sizzling patties. You go up to the bar to order, and the food is served in takeaway packaging. It’s not cosy, but then again it’s not trying to be. Who needs cutlery for a burger, anyway?
The menu, too, is nice and straightforward. There are just six burgers on offer. Best of the lot was the bacon cheese. Here, they cure their quality, thick-cut bacon for 24 hours in maple syrup and the result is a burger that’s stacked, juicy and enticingly sweet – if a teeny bit tough. The veggie burger, too, had textural issues; though exceptionally full-flavoured, the patty was a little mushy. The highlight was a side of fiery little deep-fried jalapeños – the perfect match for Beer + Burger’s fresh, light Weird Beard larger.
Minor patty issues aside, Beer + Burger is a refreshingly stripped-back spot to grab a bite. And I’m still fantasising about those jalapeños.
