Dove
The Dove, out there on the oft-overlooked western reaches of the city, is a pub with the right balance of realism, nostalgia, alienation and heritage. It’s on a bend in the river, with views of the same, and serves Fuller’s ales and unpretentious pub grub.

Harwood Arms
It’s in the posho part of Fulham, and newcomers might feel obliged to turn up the collars on their polo shirts at what is, in essence, a Home Counties gastropub with restaurant-quality food. It’s worth sacrificing your personal style for a quickie with the bar menu: in particular, the venison scotch egg is so good it has been copied across the capital.

Queen's Arms
Tucked away in a small mews, its proximity to the Royal Albert Hall makes this busy pub the favourite destination for prom-goers. Its off-street location also provides a much-needed alfresco, cobbled drinking space; inside is a combination of rough-and-ready wooden tables with a chandelier overhead.

Swan
If you were dying of thirst in the desert, this is the pub that would appear as a mirage. Its shimmering exterior clad in green glazed bricks is the stuff of visions. But so is the interior: spacious, cheery, divided between eating and drinking. There are also chesterfield sofas, wood panelling, a fire and an excellently annotated wine list. And water, of course.

White Horse
The ‘Sloaney Pony’ has long championed the joys of fine booze in pleasant surroundings (including the green, come spring). There’s an unbridled passion for beer (and Chelsea, on match days), with an Old Ale Festival on Friday November 9 to celebrate reopening after a brief revamp.
