The Betsey, as it’s universally known around Clerkenwell, has never quite managed to settle on an identity, but its all-things-to-some-people approach works in its favour. The character of your fellow drinkers on any given night will largely be determined by whether or not the pub is staging a gig, either in the amazingly pokey basement space or in the roomier, prettier upstairs bar.
Acts are usually indie hopefuls, alt-country twangers and winsome singer-songwriters, though there’s usually a surprise or two on the venue’s gig roster. Away from the entertainment, this is a roomy but ultimately pretty straightforward corner boozer, with beers by Shepherd Neame and uncomplicated pub grub by a kitchen that knows its limitations.
