This bar is named after the business that previously occupied the premises: as the sign out front advertises, the Biddle brothers were builders’ merchants. These days, the tools have been replaced by art on the walls, and the brickies buying trowels have been usurped by students drinking pints.
It’s a strange shape for a bar, long and thin and a little awkward, but the loungey feel is an appealing one, and the layout does allows you to escape the open-mic nights and other unnecessary entertainment that take place here from time to time.
The drinks list doesn’t offer any surprises: most people, chiefly locals who appreciate the bar’s location on a scruffy stretch between Hackney and Clapton, are only here for the beer.
