Looking like the kind of place where Shaggy and his gang might congregate after solving yet another mystery, the BBL offers a splendid mix of authentic Americana and knowing kitsch.
Alongside the lanes, rentable by the hour, sit walls of Apollo-era ads for bowling balls and bags (priced in dollars); bright signs advertise such unavailable delicacies as ‘Hamm’s on tap’ and ‘Whitman’s refrigerated fresh chocolates’.
Food includes ice-creams and burgers, although visitors over the age of 18 often prefer to pull up one of the tatty, bottle-green swivel seats in the shadow of the Bernard beer tap and call up one of five hard shakes (Gutter Ball, with spiced rum; Brooklyn Hit, with Jack Daniel’s, peanut butter, vanilla ice-cream and maple syrup).
Private karaoke booths and club nights (see www.bloomsburylive.com) complete the picture at this messy but altogether quite glorious place.
