There’s something of a village-pub feel to this hostelry: Putney’s first, it started life in 1826. Although it’s since been surrounded by a modern housing estate, the historic prints and games of nine-pin skittles and shove ha’penny lend a rustic feel.

The old-world ambience is amplified by the range of classic handpumps that draw from a daunting range of a dozen ales, often focusing on a selection from a particular guest brewery (or three). Lager drinkers may opt for Budvar, San Miguel, Pilsner Urquell or Staropramen; cider from Somerset’s Perry is also available.

A regular winner of CAMRA awards, the Bricklayer’s has had to struggle to retain its independence of late, but the battle appears to have been won. ‘We have no desire to be themed, modernised, sanitised! There’s not a drizzled sun-dried tomato in sight,’ it proclaims. This is a free house through and through.

Proper old school boozer - no frills, good drinks and good atmosphere. Great stuff
