Though it’s been repainted in a fetching red (it’s no longer filthy or nasty), this music landmark still pokes its tongue out.
This isn’t to suggest that the staff are rude – the opposite, in fact; they’re rough diamonds to the core – but you can’t attract a regular flow of rock nuts without a hint of attitude, especially with the jukebox gone from the back room (there are now rotating art exhibitions there). The tunes live on, though, when acoustic sessions take over from time to time, and there’s also the ‘Great London Rock ’n’ Roll Music Quiz’ every Monday.
It’s a place for ale aficionados, with the likes of Wadworth 6X and Brains’ Reverend James (‘A taste of the good life’) on draught, and there are almost as many Irish whiskeys available as from their Caledonian counterparts. Pub grub and TV football complete the perfect weekend haunt for the music-obsessed bloke.
