With its white walls, black wood and the Heath all but on the doorstep, there’s a touch of Tudor court about The Garden Gate. Maybe it's the proximity to Mother Nature that makes them follow the seasons to an extent that's somewhat rare in gastropubs. Specials are changed on the menu every month, and the roster of beers is also subject to regular change. Natural attractions also feature in the lovely, spacious garden, where you may find burgers and sausages fragrantly sizzling on the barbecue. Food is fairly typical gastropub fare, offered at prices that are gratifyingly un-Hampstead-like. Perfectly located for a beer or a meal after a stroll on the Heath.

Lovely big garden & cosy inside. Great food and £10 burger & a drink deal on Wednesdays is brilliant value.

After one summer wanting to try it out but never managing to get a table without a booking, we finally got to try it today and now I wish I hadn´t.

Although the location is excellent and the beer garden must be lovely on a sunny warm day (not the case today), the food... what an overpriced disappointment! A lovely looking Sunday roast which didn´t taste lovely at all. Our 4 plates were clearly re-heated and not fresh. The potatoes were impossible to eat with burnt soggy skin, the veggies were barely cooked and the Yorkshire pudding was really soggy. The meat was tasty but it came cold and it was really dry.

I might go back for a drink (no complaints about those or the service!) but from now on I will stay clear of the food.

Oh what a delight! Situated a stones throw away from Hampstead Heath, this pub is a triumph! Packed with a barbecue on a sunny day, it has a large beer garden at the rear with stacks of seating. It was Sunday when we visited so we had the well priced chicken roast which was scrumptious served with a pint of cider (it's the end of summer so we're allowed!) The food was hearty and filling with lots of veg and gravy (I'm northern so I'm all about the gravy) and it was served very quickly. I didn't pay attention to the interior really but I guess it was a fairly ordinary pub. The standout is the outside garden which is quaint and lovely and filled with atmosphere. A must on a sunny day.

My default go to pub. Beer garden is great in the summer and inside its cozy in winter. Burgers are good too.

Fantastic place to have lunch on a sunny summer Sunday. I had a burger with bacon that was delicious along a glass of lemonade. Sat and waited for the food to come while enjoying the nice breeze. I'll definitely go again next time I go for a walk to Hampstead Heath park.

Great pub to visit before or after visiting Hampstead park. Good food & ambience

The best pub in London. Serving brilliant drinks, and delicious food. Highly recommended !

We moved to the area a couple of years ago and soon adopted Garden Gate as our favourite local. I don't know why the other reviews have been so negative, I've found everyone there a pleasure. Food is well above average pub fare and it may be pricier than in other parts of London, but well worth it– and better than some of the pubs in the area.

No-go from a local. Several chances to impress, failure every time. Awful salad drowned in balsamic, inedible wisps of 'belly pork'. Horrible yorkshire-pud on an overpriced average-tasting Sunday Roast. Dreadfully rude staff. They do unhappily pull a decent pint, but expect to pay to be in Hampstead. Decent decor, great garden, buzzing atmosphere (no thanks to the staff). Drinks only, really, if you have money to burn. Don't waste your cash eating here.
