The building that formerly held Match EC1 was revamped in 2010 by Match supremo Jonathan Downey, and in pretty fine style.

Lined with brick walls and a handsome tin ceiling, Giant Robot pulls off the neat and unusual trick of feeling both industrial and cosy, and the split-personality nature of the decor extends to the food and drinks.

During the day, it’s a café-diner offering coffees, snacks and Italo-American food favourites such as spaghetti with meatballs and salt beef. In the evenings, you can dine or just drink from a fine, American-themed cocktail list (manhattans star Rittenhouse rye; a Brooklyn cocktail comes with Woodford Reserve). And the later it gets, the more the drinks come to the fore. A welcome and successful reinvention.

A group of 10 of us went to Giant Robot last night and I honestly, couldn't fault the place. I have been before and had a great time and after last night I had to write a review. The staff were very pleasant and accomodating to us. The food was great and didn't take that long to arrive. Very god atmosphere for a Monday night as well. All in all I would recommend it without hesitation.

There's only one reason to go to Giant Robot. The Lucky Chip burger. I don't think the service is as bad as people have made out (but then I've only ever been at lunchtime). What does grate is that their menu and till have different prices so what you see isn't what you pay. They've also begun adding a £1 charge in support of the homeless. I don't mind that, but when they add their service charge on the donation. Well it takes the piss. If they sorted their billing system out, I'd probably go more often.

The friendly bar staff is the only redeeming factor. Open kitchen + fried food = VERY stinky bar. Small building & cramped layout. Breaks boundaries for squeezing bookings into tiny space. Average quality drinks, toppy prices, cliched food, grumpy waiting staff.

Had brunch here on Saturday (veggie brunch with poached eggs) and it was amazing. The spinach was delicious, my eggs were perfect, the Giant Robot juice was really just what my hangover needed, the waiter was friendly and helpful, and the waitress was like a hot Mexican. I shall be going back to sample more of the menu.

Seriously do not know how anyone could give this place more than 1 star. Two of the staff working there last night were rude and completely incompetent. Our orders had to be taken 3 times as the waitress couldn't read her own writing. Service matters..........in this place you will not get it. Avoid.

The royale with cheese - the best burger I've had a in very long time. Totally hit the spot. Nice vibe in the place.

Over-priced small portions. I expect three raviolli (or something) to taste bloody amazing for £8. If you're going to eat here I would recommend sticking to the burgers. Cool 'atmosphere'. That's it.

Came with a birthday group for a meal last weekend and we were very disappointed with the quality of the food. Extremely average which is not good enough at the prices they charge. The crostini were a particular lowlight - voted by several of our group as the worst ever had. Several meals arrived cold and the beers weren't cold. (at £4.50 per bottle - they should have been). I will admit the cocktails were decent and good value which makes sense as the Match bars were always good with these Positives - nice atmosphere, friendly service and good cocktails Negatives - rubbish food

10 of us had a meal last Friday and the food is overpriced rubbish. Can't imagine how anyone is positive about it. Even the beers weren't cold. Only the cocktails were decent, which makes sense as Match bars always did these well. Nice buzzy vibe but stick to the cocktails here and forget the rest.

If you are concerned about spending £7 - £8 on a salad or a drink, I would not recommend going to Giant Robot; this is not because it is overpriced but simply due to the reason, once you start sampling the cocktail list, you will not be able to stop! I am used to paying £10 -£15 for a cocktail in central London, but the cocktails at this venue were half the price yet twice as good. The staff were very polite and despite being bombarded with our requests, they were incredibly friendly and attentive, especially the manager; without having to ask, she made sure we always had water on our table, she made excellent recommendations and treated us as valuable guests rather than potential sales. She even helped to organize taxis to take us home. If you appreciate good cocktails and impeccable service, Giant Robot is certainly worth a visit.
