One of Hackney’s hidden gems, this eclectic boozer draws a crowd of loyal locals to an interior that mixes candlelit antiques and modern curiosities.
Food during the week comes courtesy of Pieminister, with tasty, traditional roasts on a Sunday. On summer weekends, they fire up the barbecue for juicy burgers, fillets of sea bass and grilled halloumi, accompanied by all the salad you can eat.
Cocktails (around £8) are a hit, especially when they’re half price on Thursday’s Ladies’ Night (which also includes homemade cupcakes and a vintage clothing sale), though a bloody mary with horseradish seems the favourite on weekend afternoons. Draughts are less exciting, with Red Stripe, Staropramen, Stella Artois, Timothy Taylor Landlord and a guest ale on tap.
The varied calendar of events also includes foreign films (with free popcorn) on Mondays, while DJs and musicians enliven the weekends.
