Across the road from Hyde Park and carefully muffled against the noise of Hyde Park Corner sits the Lanesborough, a former hospital that now offers a rather more luxurious kind of sleepover.
Master bartender Salvatore Calabrese left six years ago, which may account for a slight slippage in cocktail quality: on our last visit, the Lanesborough, a combination of champagne, limoncello, aperol and fresh orange juice, tasted more like a simple Buck’s Fizz.
But the upholstery is still comfortable, the rosewood and mahogany bookshelves remain gracious, and the service continues to be gently attentive. And if you’re clever enough to arrive mid-afternoon, you’ll be offered proper canapés as well as Bombay mix and olives.
