Although the unflattering flight-attendant-style uniforms of the staff might suggest otherwise, the luxurious One Aldwych seems intent on proving that hotel lobby bars don’t have to resemble airport lounges. It’s hard not to be wowed by the soaring space, with its triffid-sized flower arrangements, elegant pillars and ceiling-height windows; but the majesty of the room is lent intimacy by high-backed armchairs, comfortable sofas and shimmering candles.
Staff at the sleek black bar dispense a selection of expertly mixed cocktails – starting at £11.50, or £12.50 for champagne varieties – from a seasonal list that might include a warming Winter Essence (Calvados Boulard, bay leaves, cinnamon and own-made prune syrup). On our last visit, we were served house champagne instead of the requested Louis Roederer, but service is otherwise slick and friendly.
