Although the Princess of Wales has undergone a revamp by Mitchells & Butlers, turning it into a modern bar bright with exotic beer taps, the pub hasn’t forgotten its history. In 1871, England players gathered here before the first ever international rugby union match, an event commemorated with a modest alcove of mementoes.
Elsewhere, though, the huge main bar, a corridor of tables and various back areas done out in pub-cum-lounge-bar style have been given over to a young clientele sipping selections from a global beer range (Doom Bar, Meantime Stout, Früli, Kozel) to a student-rock soundtrack.
Dishes such as a large 21-day-aged rib-eye steak or Cotswolds lamb leg steak with lentils and peppers can also be enjoyed on the front terrace, in the conservatory or in the back garden.

Filthy and full of local alcoholics. The police has been called more than once in response to physical altercations. I don't like it.
I bloody love my local pub! Good food that's often updated, and a relaxed comfy atmosphere are the highlights. Looking forward to the summer when patrons spill out onto the heath for a drink in the sun.
My favourite place for outdoors drinks, summer or fireworks night it's always the meeting place, my go to pub.
Our absolutely favourite for family Sunday lunch. Great countryside atmosphere as they accept dogs, suddenly you feel like you are somewhere in Kent... Sometimes when I am stressed I go on my own as well, no prob for a girl by herself, I feel safe and relaxed. Very very good also when it is nice and you can buy a pint and sit out on the grass so admire the sunset - aahhhh! Fabulous.
A packed house at 12.30 on a Sunday afternoon, the service was good and the food excellent. Large portions of good quality food and excellent desserts. Bit worried about the barman who thought port went into a bloody Mary but otherwise the service was quick and friendly.
Was a fab pub 5 years ago then went downhill with poor management. Believe there was a new manager 6 months ago and it has become amazing again - both bars are open again, food is great and staff seem to actually care again about the customer. Definately worth a visit again
Was a favourite, now a pub I avoid at all costs. The Sunday nut roast, may be worth a visit again in the future, only if they managed to serve it to me with a smile and within an hour! For some bizarre reason, the current manager still does not realise, when it's a hot day,it's going to get busy, so get more staff. The same issue that this place has had for years, just nev ever corrected. Totallly insane as I know for sure, I will not visit again and nor will some of my other local friends. Staff are a little blunt and food is pretty dire every time we have ordered recently, really disappointing. The best thing is location, the worst thing, everything else about this pub.
