Away from the contrived Rocklands scene nearby, this corner pub has rediscovered its mojo and its old name. A former dive and quite fantastic music venue in the late 1980s before it became the clubby but unsuccessful Paradise Bar, the Albert has pushed its prices slightly higher.

The beers are a major attraction: guest ales on the four pumps might include the output of breweries such as Purity, Harviestoun and Thornbridge, while bottled Duvel, Brooklyn and Chimay complement a succinct, mid-range wine list. Picture windows overlook a raised front terrace with a commanding view of the 53 bus.

This is a cracking pub. Great selection of beers and the food is a high standard and decent value. Best of all though, is the staff, who do not, like much of the competition, confuse being young and trendy with being difficult and obstinant. Instead, they are friendly, accommodating and knowledgable. A refreshing oasis in SE London

Great. Went there to watch the footie and had a great roast at the same time. Not many places you can do those two things together well...

they do strawberry beer, and erm, its actually where the contrived rocklands live in new cross films were made. nice nosh too.
