Whilst filling my face with the tastiest Thai food I had eaten in quite some time and feeling like I hadn't actually eaten in days, I completely forgot, as I gazed lovingly into my gorgeous Green Curry...that I was in a pub. And, said pub, is a bit of a stonker; ambient and atmospheric, whilst retaining all that is great about traditional pub decor, with an added flair of shabby chic and retro artwork. And they have an excellent choice of scotch, rum and whatever you might fancy...The Coach and Horses is a winner.

You walk through a velvet curtain into what feels like a bar on a boat, it’s dimly lit with window booths, and quite often there’s a jazz band playing in the corner – if not the music is always on the mark.  The staff are super friendly and efficient, which is all too hard to come by in London.  There’s a Thai kitchen, which is separate from the pub, and the food is pretty damn good.  The 3 tables on the pavement are like gold dust, if you can get one enjoy some good ol’ fashioned people watching from the warmth of the outdoor heaters.

Busy, friendly real pub at the junction of the High Street (real Stoke Newington) and Church Street ("it's grim up North London"). Doom Bar and Black Sheep on tap, great inexpensive Thai food, music at a tolerable level. Gets a little packed and noisy but not horribly so, and the hipster quotient isn't too heavy. One of the best pubs in N16.
