‘The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it,’ reads the quote that runs across the wall of the reception area of this relatively ambitious, comparatively off-beat gay bar,

set between Soho Square and the archway of Manette Steet.

The nearby portrait of the quote’s originator, Oscar Wilde (who else?), is no gimmick: the dark-fronted bar stages occasional literary and Wilde-themed events. Downstairs, though, you could be in any gay Soho basement, with pumping electro beats and flirty Latin staff.

Mention must be made of the drinks: nearly 20 ‘long and fruity’ cocktails in standard combinations based on Finlandia and Krupnik vodkas and Bombay Sapphire gin. House specialities include the ‘short and snazzy’ Carnation Kiss (Amaretto and Maraschino). Little fuss has been made of the beers, but wines run to a Charles Vienot chablis (£28.50) and a similarly priced pinot noir from the same stable.

What a filthy hole. They obviously do not clean the place, My glass had lipstick on it and smelt awful. I could smell the toilets from the basement and the sound system is a joke. The draught lager was sour. Very bad value for money.

Trashy, obvious and over-priced with some of the most exceptionally rude and unhelpful staff you are liable to encounter in Soho.

The Green Carnation is now, after some ups and downs in the past, one of the best cosy bars in Soho. It's now under new some management and me and my friends have found it clean and classy, with candles, sofas, friendly waiter service and an amazingly fun piano sing-along with a great pianist every Thursday evening, and a cabaret on Wednesdays, and a great DJ late nights. What more could we want?!  I've really enjoyed the evenings I've spent there recently (and the happy hour prices!).

This place does not deserve any stars. Plastic glasses, no love is put in the cocktails, rude (and bored) staff, rude manager, filthy, so dark it's a definite health and safety issue... Never, ever go here if you want to find a fun or classy place in the west end.

Spent New Years Eve in the Green Carnation and what a night it was. Such a hidden little venue, definitely be going back!!

Me and my friend went to Green Carnation for a catch-up over drinks last week. Haven't been for a while but we had such a good time. Venue was as amazing as ever, service was good and we got Happy Hour Cocktails. We'll be back there soon no questions asked!!
