On a Friday night, when this tiny basement bar was rammed, our waitress said all the tables were booked. But she added that a table for four at the back had just two ‘really nice people’ sitting there and she’d ask if we could share with them. They said yes, and we were in. This warm welcome is typical of one of the best bars in Shoreditch – in all London, in fact. From the moment you walk in, they know how to make you happy. The short list of original cocktails is unfailingly good: lots of nice twists on classic ideas but never departing from the essential cocktail principles of balance, harmony and drinkability. Star turns: Mr McRae, Perfect Storm and Tokyo Collins. But the classics are brilliantly handled, and the food is fabulous. And that service! This very special place is not very large and plenty of people know about it, so booking is a good idea.
