7 Love It
London Bridge

The Hide Bar has ridden out the credit crunch with aplomb, filling to the gills from Thursdays onward with nine-to-fivers happy to be sinking quality mixed drinks near a transport hub.

Most cocktails are priced in the £6.50 to £7 range, including house specials such as the Passionate Englishman (Hendrick’s gin stirred with passion fruit purée), the Bermondsey Martini (Jensen’s gin and Noilly Prat) and the American in London (Knob Creek bourbon infused with Earl Grey tea, peach liqueur, Peychaud’s bitters and sweet vermouth).

Seventy-odd other options are available, drawn from a selection of spirits that would put most bars in London to shame (and all sold by the glass to boot). Wines are equally well sourced: you won’t find Mezcala tinto (a Bordeaux-style Mexican blend) in too many places.

There are a few mains but the platters are more intriguing – the Southbank pairs soft-shell crabs, stuffed baby squid and gravadlax with mango, mint and tomato salsa.

Hide Bar says
The Hide has been serving great cocktails, local beers and carefully selected wines in The Wine & Spirit Education Trust building on Bermondsey Street since the start of 2007. Cocktails are our speciality, and with more than 500 of the world's best spirits on the back bar, we're happy to tailor them to your specifications - whether it's in a vintage sazerac or a smoky mezcal punch.

We love our local Bermondsey gin from Jensen's and craft beers from the likes of Fourpure and Kernel, and along with them, we try to source as much as possible from local producers and distributors.

The Hide is open from Tuesday-Saturday from 5pm-late (1am-2am). We are seated only, so please make a reservation, particularly later in the week when we can get very busy.

Awesome (random) night recently at The Hide Bar. We strolled in there at 11pm for a casual "last one before bed", ending up leaving when they were turning down the bar and putting the chairs up. Why? Because the cocktails here are superb (and ya know, once you pop, you just can't stop).  The bar staff really know their shizzle, so you can tell them what you like and they'll find something for you.

It's about £9 a cocktail, or £8 a long drink, but I found the liquor was quality and tasted good. I'm a cocktail snob, and this place did me proud. I recommend trialling out the cucumber gin options. Also I can't wholly remember but I'm pretty certain I tried something called an Indian Summer which was pretty tasty. Who knows, I was merry as an elf.

Would return. I believe it's under new management this year and it shows... GO HIDE BAR! YOU'RE AWESOME.

I have been to the hide a number of times recently, and while i live in west london, it is well worth the long trip home.. The ambience is just right, not too cool for school but happening enough to set it apart from other bars.. I have always received an excellent and attentive service (and much improved since they went to all seating), and while it can take time to make a perfect cocktail, it is inevitably worth the time invested - or you can even enjoy an interesting variety of beer while you wait.... The best bit of all is to ask the bar-people (or mixologists as i refuse to call them) to recommend a drink, and by using their encyclopedic knowledge you always get something that blows your hair back and puts a smile on your lips... Highly recommend, if only the owners could open another bar nearer to me, or even in the square mile..!

Service - awful, food (should have been delicious italian rice balls) - awful (far too deep fried for what they should be), cocktails - very slow, served with no passion. Here's an example of weakness at the bar: I ordered two gin martinis, the mixologist had to pour one martini into the other glass because he hadn't poured the cocktail shaker equally into each glass. For almost a tenner I would expect A) a full glass and B) professionalism. The mixologists were amateurs. I won't be coming back.

The Hide Bar was a great place to catch up with friends over superb cocktails and amazing food. Booked a table for 10 last Saturday for my wife's birthday. Cocktails were inventive and relatively inexpensive considering they were pretty potent! We ordered platters to share and that did not disappoint either. But the best thing about the place was the staff. They were knowledgeable about the cocktails, friendly and accommodating. Plus, they kept on providing us (and every table) with water. Will definitely be back.

This place was amazing. Took a Lady here and the joint did the business, the absolute business. I reserved a table and they allowed us the use of the back room, usually reserved for group bookings. The waiters were friendly, knowledgeable and did all they could to look after us. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. we both had such a great night and she was very impressed...with the venue.

Had a great night at Hide. Bar tenders were amazing, new exactly what they were doing. Cocktails were beautiful. It was a bit busy, but service times still reasonable given the effort put into the drinks. Will be back!

To give you a more up-to-date review, we were there last night and the service was exemplary. I arrived early to meet friends and was treated well, given a glass of water while I perused the menu. Then a champagne cocktail was prepared expertly before me. As I waited, the staff kept an eye on my drink and topped up my water without me needing to ask. When my friends arrived we grabbed a table and were immediately given drinks menus. The staff were knowledgable about their staggeringly comprehensive drinks menu and gave good recommendations. We spent the next three hours enjoying a couple of drinks each, unhurried. Nicely busy on a Tuesday night but not rammed. Would most definitely go back.
