The jaunty slogans that usually grace the blackboards outside this Clerkenwell pub, twinned with the Hawley Arms in Camden, reflect the cheery nature of the entire enterprise. On the left is a happy-go-lucky pub, not especially handsome but comfortable enough.
The drinks list is led by two ales, both guests; food is solid pub grub. On the right, meanwhile, is a separate room given over to gigs and club nights, which works equally well as an all-standing space for gigs by guitar-slinging indie hopefuls and a cabaret-style set-up with tables and chairs.
The make-up of the clientele in the pub depends on who’s playing in the gig space, but pointy shoes and tight jeans are usually in abundance. A well-run operation.
