    Teas are served in The Conservatory,a glass-roofed room of Orwellesque potted plants and oversized china.

    The Waldorf Hilton

    The Hilton has taken over the Waldorf and spent a fortune refurbishing. The new and beautiful Homage Pâtisserie is a good attempt – though on our recent visit we found both service and pâtisserie disappointing.

    The Ritz
    Bookings are essential at least six weeks in advance. The dress code is jacket and tie – no jeans or trainers.
    Palm Court, The Ritz, 150 Piccadilly, W1J 9BR (020 7493 8181/ www.theritzhotel.co.uk) Green Park tube. Tea served daily, reserved sittings at 1.30pm, 3.30pm, 5.30pm, 7.30pm. Set tea £34.

    The Savoy
    Served in the Thames Foyer, in the centre of the hotel.

    The Soho Hotel
    The meeja set's current favourite hotel. Nice bar too.
