Chapel Market

Discarded traders' boxes and the debris of fast-food meals taken on the hoof litter Chapel Market after dark, and the way is illuminated by the back-lit signboards of Iceland, Starburger and William Hill. It doesn't seem the most obvious path to good cheer. But persevere for a handful of quality establishments far superior to the serial dumping of corporate rubbish that passes for the bars of nearby Upper Street.

Bricklane

The blossoming of a chic DJ bar (Lane) at a boutique hotel (City) among the Indian restaurants, rag-trading and Jack-the-Ripper tourism of Brick Lane is not as incongruous as it first seems. While making an untidy living from cut-rate curry and cheap clothes, compact and diverse Brick Lane has been nurturing a cool underground music and bar scene. Centred on opposing outlets in the Truman Brewery complex (Vibe Bar, 93 Feet East), Brick Lane is still fostering newcomers (Big Chill, Exit). This unlikely trail of intriguing venues - complemented by traditional pubs championed by quotable artists in the neighbourhood - makes for a convenient bar stumble comparable to trawling Hoxton in the late 1990s.
