Hammersmith

The pubs of Hammersmith reflect the split personality of one of west London's more colourful neighbourhoods. The Blue Anchor, Dove and Old Ship are frequented by a mellow, moneyed crowd who like to play down at the river's edge while enjoying the view and a spot of gastrofare. Meanwhile the Brook Green Hotel and Salutation cater for a more down-toearth, characterful crowd in from the busy thoroughfares of King Street and Shepherd's Bush Road.

Catford

Despite having a reputation that makes the Bronx appear a little on the genteel side, Catford has plenty going for it. Not least a theatre, two Japanese restaurants (one good, one even better), a giant black cat perched on top of the shopping centre and a handful of decent boozers. The best pubs are scattered to the four corners of SE6, with the first technically in Lewisham SE13 and another sneaking into SE23. But hey, who's counting? We covered the crawl on foot in well under three hours and had time to rubbish our respective overpaid, underachieving football teams and sink a leisurely pint in each. Beerhunters take note: Catford Beer Festival, organised by CAMRA, takes place at the Broadway Theatre on June 8-11 (see www.selcamra.org.uk for details).
