Sandwiches here, made with their own-baked breads, have evocative French names and ingredients that place them a cut above many outlets. ‘Marseille' (£2.80), a smoked salmon sandwich, comes with lemon-tasting sorrel, capers and mayonnaise. Crayfish (or ‘Sête') isn't paired with traditional rocket but with celeriac remoulade, capers and baby gem. ‘Lyon' is a tasty combination of chicken, crème fraîche and chilli jam (though what it's got to do with Lyon we cannot fathom). Three options are available toasted, including ‘Alsace' with pastrami, emmental cheese, sauerkraut and mustard. Pastries include organic cheesecake, pear tart, profiteroles and coconut macaroons. Diners sit at long communal benches in eight (soon to be nine) London branches.
