Prince George
The George has always prided itself on the fact that it doesn’t do food. It’s a pub. And a much-loved one at that, drawing a loyal local following years before the latest Hackney upstarts arrived. The drinks selection is perfectly respectable, with well-kept London Pride, Flowers Original and Litovel on tap and a decent wine range (from £10.40 a bottle), plus the usual spirits. On Monday, friendly but focused locals pack in for one of the best pub quizzes around, and the jukebox offers an excellent range of tunes from the likes of Neil Simon and Nina Simone. The decor is strictly period Victorian: stuffed birds and fish, a bust of Brunel above the bar, and one of those old-school wall maps where England is the same size as France (and almost a quarter the size of India). In winter the fires blaze, but the welcome is warm year-round. And if you’re hungry? Well, there’s posh biltong or crisps.

A proper pub, good beer, seemed like decent clientele and friendly staff. An over eager bar man tipped away a full drink - was quickly replaced with no problems. Fancy a crack at the quiz next time. - Lots of railings to lock bikes to.
