Hakkasan
Clearly aware of the importance of making an entrance, upmarket Chinese restaurant Hakkasan whisks customers off an arterial alley and plunges them into a hidden Narnia of Oriental other-worldliness. A cavernous descent opens into a stone-cut cloakroom peppered with purple blossoms and flickering candles, which in turns leads to the dining room itself; a three-dimensional Chinese woodcut of interlocking, intimate little booths. Along one side runs the bar, where aquamarine backlighting and flickering water patterns projected on to grey slate walls lend a dreamy liquidity. Cocktails (£8.50) are the stuff of Asian-influenced fantasy: the Purple Emperor is sharp with a mix of Matusalem ten-year-old rum, saké and jasmine tea, and comes topped with a clipped purple pansy, while the Long Dragon is a blend of lime saké, Noilly Prat and ginger ale. A fully immersive experience for the discerning drinker.

We had a great time and loved the food, decor and service. This was a while ago but I decided to try and book for Dec for a group of 8. They will only allow a fixed price menu, the first one offered was £200 the second £88. Both were plus wine. OUCH. Happily I have booked a better and more...
