Lord Stanley
Once you’re ensconced at a ramshackle wooden table – or better still, on one of the tatty but much coveted leather sofas – this is the kind of place where day segues into evening with dangerous ease. There’s a convivial buzz: beardy intellectuals rub shoulders with vintage-chic girls and louche youths in skinny cords, while regulars hold court at the gleaming, horseshoe-shaped bar over a wordlessly replenished pint. Despite a preponderance of good shoes and directional haircuts among the trendier clientele, this remains an unpretentious neighbourhood boozer, so there’s minimal posing and preening. Draught offerings range from Adnams to Staropramen and the wine list is nicely chosen; the food is great, if pricey. Get here early if you can – latecomers invariably end up at the tiny table by the gents.
