Hampstead may have become part of London in 1888, but no one seems to have told the Holly Bush. As the trend for gutting old pubs claims yet more NW3 boozers, this place becomes ever more popular. It’s as picturesque as they come, tucked away on a quiet, gas-lit back street and delivering on all fronts: friendly staff, ancient interior and fine, reasonably priced food (from spruced-up sarnies to lamb shank in beer). Though the upstairs restaurant does a roaring trade, it’s really all about getting the pints in and perching by the fire or in one of the wooden booths. Our only complaint is that the backroom’s glaring refurb could have been more sympathetic.

Attractive and takes pride in my appearance and style. I'm relaxed with a easy going sense of humour. Always looking on the positive side of things...

great pub and atmosphere, but the food was a real let down. Two of my friends' dinners were just about average, while mine and my boyfriend's were very poor quality. Will be coming back for a glass of wine, but definitely not lunch or dinner.
Amazing Pub!
Had our Xmas party for 27 of us, excellent service with a smile and really tasty! Had my reservations for such a large group but worth it! Keep up the hard work, well done!
Great place for drinks, cheerful (if slightly slow) waiter service but the most disappointing, most overpriced gastro pub food I have had over five years of living in london.
Four of us ate in the upstairs restaurant, having booked for 7.00pm. Only one other table was occupied at the time. Our order was taken promptly and drinks appeared quickly. That was as good as it got. Our food finally arrived, sometime after 8.00pm, by which time several other groups had arrived, including a huge birthday party, clearly expected (so you'd think the place would be organised to cope). The food was OK but nothing special, veg. somewhat underdone and dishes lukewarm. We then ordered cheese and coffee - by 9.40 we gave up on the wait for them, paid for what we'd had and left. There were two waitresses - ours expressed surprise that it hadn't appeared from the kitchen when we asked about the whereabouts of our cheese etc. but hadn't registered the fact that we had sat for an hour waiting for it. There's a hefty service charge but a total lack of anything approximating to service. The kitchen clearly can't cope and the waiting staff are amateurish - we shan't go back. In addition, by the time we left the very steep, narrow stairs to the restaurant were a hazard with pools of spilt gravy from plates being carried by staff from the downstairs kitchen.
I was most pleasantly suprised to find tucked away in the back streets of Hampstead the holly bush, a small yet busy pub. Wth all the charm and character that a traditional English tavern should have. Despite not being much of a drinker myself, the selection of well chosen and kept ales were irresistable, i chose a pint of Harveys, and found myself following that up with another 2 pints.... what else can i say about remarkable little place with friendly staff, wonderfull home made food and a pint that well, will take a lot to beat!
A great place! Friendly staff and great service. I had my Bday party with over 30 friends and we all had a great evening (and service was still speedy if you think they were still dealing with 100 other more customers)! Pity about the residential area as they don't have late license. Definitely recommended, everything a pub should be!
Last night, four of us ate in the restaurant upstairs, which was busy and there was one girl serving. She was over stretched. My girlfriend and I ordered steak and waited one hour for the food to arrive.
When my medium rare steak finally showed up, the meat was really poor quality. It was well done, shoddy looking, sodden, small, shoe leather. The vegetables were awful, a stodgy overcooked slab of potatoe, hot and cold tomatoes and what appeared to be raw carrots cooked for 45 seconds..? One of the side salads looked like it had been scraped off another plate, that we would not have ordered, had we known the same would be served on our plate? I sent back the carcass and received a burger 30 minutes later, that was ok.
In addition, they had the audacity to charge 12.5% service and not deduct the difference of the burger from the steak on the bill. I’m not sure what is going on in the restaurant and kitchen but I would certainly recommend firing the chef.
The pub, architecture and history are everything’ a pub should be.
The cuisine is amateur at best. The four of us collectively agreed, a high street chain’ was better than this offering.
