Don’t let prior booking, clearance from security and strictly enforced admission times put you off: this bar at the top of Tower 42 gives truly breathtaking views. Seats are arranged so that everyone can enjoy the panorama. Redecorated a couple of years ago in a soothing purple colour-scheme, it offers a selection of dishes from the menu of Rhodes Twenty Four restaurant , some 18 floors down (a plate of canapés; steak with grilled blue cheese mushrooms and watercress; pear and cinnamon tart). Champagne starts at £46 for a bottle of Veuve Delaroy Brut and rises to a blinging £795.50 for a magnum of Krug. There are also still wines (Provençal rosé £7.50 per glass) and cocktails (Pimm’s royale £11.50).
