Troubadour
Drinking holes don’t come much more eccentric than the Troubadour. It’s a slice of 1960s bohemia that hasn’t yet dragged itself into the 21st century – much to the relief of the regulars, who lounge around sipping coffee or red wine while daydreaming about their unfinished acoustic ballads and surreal novellas. The marble tabletops, wooden stools and ornate mirrors are lifted straight out of a European café, and the music drifting up from the basement venue (where Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and many others have played) is predictably heartfelt and unplugged. Beers are primarily bottled and referred to as ‘talking water’; reds, whites and bubbles are around £4.50 a glass; daiquiris and sours are just under £6 and arrive, hilariously, in a Duralex tumbler – but you really wouldn’t want it any other way. Idiosyncratically glorious.
